Annotation:
With the main focus of oil and gas exploration shifting to isolated regions of Eastern and North-Eastern Russia, there occurs the urgent necessity of increasing reliable energy capacities in remote territories of the country. Oil and gas facilities at the regional and exploration-appraisal stages of geological exploration require rapidly growing electrical and thermal loads, while diesel generation is limited by logistics capabilities and prohibitively high fuel costs. Small modular reactors of low-power nuclear power plants and, in particular, serial floating nuclear thermal power plants offer a technological solution of this problem. Russian projects demonstrate the practical feasibility of this approach and its competitiveness in relation to thermal power generation in the Arctic and Siberia. The author of the article considers these solutions as a key instrument for energy supply and subsequent development of deposits, acceleration of remote territories development and formation of the export potential of Russian technologies in nuclear energy.
