Annotation:
In 1972 it was demonstrated by Yu.A. Voronin and E.A. Eganov that facies are constructs that are created by grouping lithotypes for achieving a specific goal and are based on pre–accepted assumptions. Based on this theoretical premise, the authors proved the fact that if facies are constructed from lithotypes as geological bodies corresponding to a predetermined system of sedimentation environments, then they can be used as research instruments at different stages of oil and gas exploration. However, since the research objectives at the prospecting and exploration stages differ, the assumptions underlying the facies modeling should also be different. At the prospecting stage, the task is to build a lithological model of the object in order to predict presence of hydrocarbon reservoirs and traps. That’s’ why, facies should be determined in accordance with the lateral sequence of environments reflecting the patterns of sedimentation characteristics in the basin, in particular, the zones of muds and sands accumulation. Such a system of environments, on the one hand, should be generalized enough to have a regular character, on the other hand, to provide a prospection of reservoirs and hydrocarbon traps. At the exploration, one of the main tasks is to predict the initial flow rates and accumulated production per well in different parts of the accumulation. Therefore, facies in this case should be determined in accordance with the lateral sequence of environments that maximally reflects the internal lithological heterogeneity of productive horizons.
