New aspects of energy security in a fragmented geopolitical environment

Annotation:

The author of the article analyzes changes in the understanding of the changing nature and problems of energy security by western experts as well as the evolution of the methods and means of ensuring it. It is shown that the energy security current rethinking occurs in the context of the energy transition – the transition of the world energy system from a dominant dependence on fossil fuels to a more diversified energy balance and increasingly diverse and decentralized energy systems. The materials of the Summit on the Future of Energy Security, organized by the International Energy Agency and the UK Government, which took place on April 24-25, 2025 in London, are considered. The summit expanded the energy security discussion beyond traditional delivery problems. The discussions covered cybersecurity problems, extreme weather events and climate resilience, resilience of supply chains for critically important minerals and clean technologies, problems of decentralized energy systems integration and various energy security challenges faced by different countries. The issues of ensuring oil and gas security through effective emergency response and ensuring reliable and resilient supply chains for critical minerals were considered in more detail. In conclusion, it was noted that the Summit made an unkind cut on Russia.
