Technical facilities of field seismic survey crews: development trends and environmental risks

Annotation:

The study analyzes the environmental risks of land–based seismic exploration for hydrocarbons, which are a key element of modern energy. Data on the technical bases of thirty-two geophysical crews that carried out their activities from 2001 to 2022 were systematized, processed and analyzed. Sustainable negative trends were noted. The main environmental consequences include: critical habitat fragmentation disrupting migration and reducing biodiversity; soil and vegetation degradation; leaks and emissions of pollutants into the atmosphere; noise impact on fauna. To minimize damage, options for upgrading specialized equipment to more compact equipment options already available in the market are proposed. The need of conventional transport replacement with Euro 5 standard equipment is emphasized. The study proves that technological progress in seismic exploration should be inextricably accompanied by the greening of processes to reduce the total anthropogenic load.
