Pipeline leaks can have serious consequences including threats to human safety, damage to the environment, property and reputation, not mentioning the financial loss through penalties. The article describes the principles and trial results of a new leak detection system based on the detection of pressure waves associated with a leak. The leak detection system is a software and hardware package that processes information from pressure measurement sensors. The leak detection method provides calculation and analysis of coefficients of pressure correlation trends at the neighboring means of measurements. A 820-km long pipeline was experimentally tested at different operational modes of the pipeline. The medium pumped through the pipeline was oil. The proposed leak detection system proved its efficiency when detecting small leaks. The leak detection system is able to detect the small leak with the accuracy up to ±300 m within 5 minutes since the moment of its occurrence.
