Mercaptans are among the most chemically aggressive compounds that cause corrosion of structural materials. Control of mercaptans content in hydrocarbon media in contact with these materials is an important task. In the present work we created a new solid-phase reagent for the express determination of “mercaptan sulfur”. Determination in hydrocarbon media is based on the color reaction of organic mercaptan compounds with sodium nitroprusside. We obtained solid-phase reagents of the following composition: aluminum oxide – sodium nitroprusside – organic cation. It was found that the organic cation in their composition contributes to the stabilization of the resulting stained compound. We used the detected stabilizing effect of the presence of large organic cations to create a new express method for the determination of “mercaptan sulfur”. The tetraalkylammonium and tetraphenylphosphonium ions were studied as color stabilizers. A reagent with tetrabutylammonium ion as a stabilizer turned out to be the most effective of those studied. On its basis we created a solid-phase analytical reagent for the development of test methods for determining sulfur-containing compounds in gasoline using solid-phase spectrophotometry and DRS (diffuse reflectance spectroscopy). The sensitivity of the determination by solid-phase spectrophotometry and DRS depends on the sample volume and the mass of the used solid-phase reagent and is n∙10–n∙10–2 mg/kg. Foreign accompanying components of gasoline and diesel fuels do not react with the proposed solid-phase reagent.
