Use of Tripod Beta method in internal accident investigations

Annotation:
The article analyzes the methodological approaches in the process of internal investigation of accidents in order to identify the immediate and root causes of accidents. The paper considers the methods used in the internal investigation of accidents at work: ‘Why?’ and Barrier Analysis. The results of the application of these methods of identifying the root causes of accidents are presented on the example of studying the circumstances of a particular accident at an oil pumping station. The authors underline that the using only one of the above-mentioned methods in order to identify the immediate and root causes may be insufficient to determine the cause-and-effect relationships in the accidents at work. In this regard, for the first time it is suggested to use a method not earlier used in domestic oil and gas companies – Tripod Beta. The complex and multi-factor structure of the method, including the identification of root causes and analysis of safety barriers is sufficient and does not require the search for additional tools for internal accident investigation. The application of this method will enable effective development of corrective actions aimed at eliminating the recurrence of similar accidents in the future in order to reduce the level of occupational injuries at the companies.
