Annotation:

The snow cover is the accumulator of dust fallout that allows using it to study the dust pollution. It is especially relevant for the hydrocarbon production areas in the northern regions, where the environment undergoes a strong technogenic pressure and the duration of the period with the negative temperatures of an atmospheric air is over six months. The assessment of the dust particles content in Surgut city and nearby territories, located near the objects of oil and gas infrastructure, has been carried out. The effectiveness and informativeness of the indices calculated based on Landsat satellite images, used for the estimation of snow cover characteristics, has been considered. The research field data were compared with the spectral characteristics of the snow cover. The content of insoluble particles, physical characteristics and dust load of the snow cover prove the fact of its difference from the background site with a high degree of reliability. The most dependence on dust load is observed for index SCI (r = –0.63) that points out at the possibility of using it for assessing the snow contamination by dust particles.
