Annotation:

The article investigates the use of virtualization and emulation tools, in particular open-source solutions, in the context of IT professional competence assessment. The authors of the article classify and completely describe the existing solutions for emulation and virtualization of computer networks. Using the example of the AtomSkills-2023 championship in the competence "Information Security: Analysis of Data Protection from External Threats", the effectiveness of such solutions is analyzed and compared with commercial products. The authors of the article consider in detail the advantages and disadvantages of each approach, paying attention to their cost, complexity and potential redundancy for most scenarios. Based on the results of the analysis, the authors of the article conclude that open-source solutions are currently the best choice for training and assessment of IT professional competencies. However, the authors emphasize the importance of continued research in this area in the light of rapid technological development and changing market needs.
