Methods and problems of improving leak detection systems in the main pipeline transportation of hydrocarbons

Annotation:
Over 90 % of oil and gas produced in Russia are transported through long distance pipelines. Pipelines are normally accounted to be depreciated within 20…25 years period, but in practice their complete reconstruction after this term is not viable economically. With pipelines aging risks of accidents increase and consequences of leaks for the environment can be substantial. Introduction and improvement of automated leaks detection systems (LDS) is one of important aspects for the pipeline transport safety. A review of accidents’ statistics on long distance pipelines from 2000 till 2023 is presented by the author of the article. It names factors for higher reliability and safety level of pipelines performance. The author of the article also presents a classification and comparative review of the existing methods for leaks distant detection in pipelines, describes regulatory requirements for LDS. An accent is given to the importance of combination of different leak detection methods and of further studies to improve mathematical methods and models used in LDS.
