The persisting increased demand for hydrocarbon raw materials in the world with a decrease in proven reserves on land is causing the more increasing interest in the deposits located in the waters of the seas and oceans. The most obvious examples are those countries the territories of have water boundaries. The processes of well construction and offshore hydrocarbon production have a number of technological differences from those ones carried out onshore. In this regard, it is very important to study the experience of foreign companies that have developed unique technologies for the construction of drilling facilities and drilling in harsh natural and climatic marine conditions. The paper presents the results of analytical studies of wells construction on the Norwegian shelf in the North Sea, shows the main distinctive features of offshore drilling (typical well designs, drilling technology, well completion). The photographs of models of offshore drilling rigs made in the Oil and Gas Museum of the city of Stavanger (Norway) are presented. The experience of successful use of original drilling fluids at high pressures and temperatures for well completion is considered.
