Annotation:

The article presents the results of the authors' research concerning promising trends of the development of roller cone bits with hard-alloy cutting structures, which allow creating and regulating an artificial network of macrocracks intersecting in all directions at the well bottom, which divide the well bottom rock surface into small sharp protrusions separated from each other by free space. Such individual rock ledges are many times easier to destroy by applying the method of shearing and stretching by the side surfaces of wedge-shaped teeth with minimal energy consumption for destruction. With each turn of the bit, the number, height and location of individual small ledges of the rock are continuously changing, thus reducing the magnitude of the bridges relief and adjacent holes of the "rack" at the well bottom. Facilitating of the process of scattered small ledges destruction allows providing high mechanical drilling speed for a longer time without increasing the axial load on the bit. This fact has a positive effect on the support stability increase. Due to the facilitated loading of the teeth, a multiple increase in their fatigue resistance is provided. Ultimately, the creation and regulation of a network of intersecting vertical fractures at the well bottom provides an increase in the durability of the cutting structures and support, an increase of the mechanical speed of drilling and penetration of insert drill bits with a greater economic effect.
