Reasons for reducing the technical operational life-time of wire ropes on mobile drilling rigs

Annotation:

The development of modern drilling rigs is closely related to the increase of their mobility. At the same time, large-capacity mobile drilling rigs equipped by a power top drive system are gaining popularity. The increase of the installations transportability and installation capability reduces the weight and dimensions of the main drilling equipment, including the equipment of the hoisting complex. Reduction of the winch drum diameter and the pulleys diameter of the tackle system has a negative impact on the technical resource of wire ropes – the most loaded and subjected to wear elements of the hoisting complex. The choice of the wire rope design for some mobile installations is not justified and, as the practice has shown, is erroneous. These and other factors leading to a significant acceleration of the wire ropes wear on mobile drilling rigs are discussed in the article. The authors of the article are aware of some cases of wire ropes breakage on mobile drilling rigs, the cause of which was the rapid wear of the wire rope and the insufficient level of control of its state during operation.
