Annotation:

The authors of the article consider the quality indicators of barite weighting agents, regulated by the Russian and international standards. Due to the development of deep drilling, characterized by high formation pressures, weighting agents are particularly important as drilling fluids components. Currently, barite weighting agents are the most popular. One of the most important indicators of the weighting agent the quality is density: its value determines both the concentration of the weighting agent and the total content of the solid phase in the solution, and, as a result, the drilling speed of the well. However, the weighting capacity of the material depends not only on the density, but also on the mineralogical composition of the weighting agent, the presence and nature of impurities, chemical inertness, dispersion, hydrophilic capacity, etc. The authors also present the results of laboratory tests confirming the influence of the colloidal coefficient influence of the weighting agent on its weighting capacity. The problems of assessing the quality of barite, which do not allow drilling companies to use weighting agents without preliminary laboratory tests, are identified.
