The authors of the article, based on the results of an analytical review of domestic and foreign research experience, consider one of the most important problems that engineers face when drilling wells in complicated geological-technical conditions, namely, the wellbore walls stability. It was revealed that wellbore instability causes are divided into mechanical and chemical ones, arising as a result of destructive interaction between the rock, usually shale, and the drilling fluid. In addition, hydrates in the wellbore can gasify the drilling mud, reduce the density of the drilling mud, hydrostatic pressure, change the solution rheology and cause wellbore instability. However, some sources are natural ones, that is, inherent to the formation, while others are associated with the drilling process and are controlled by the driller. The cause can be eliminated by correctly determining the critical pressure of the drilling mud and the optimal well trajectory. Thus, we can significantly reduce the time and cost of drilling and production, preventing some problems that can arise during drilling. The main objective of the article is to determine the stability characteristics and the wellbore walls state, the causes of wellbore instability, the optimal density of the drilling mud by the range of change of the drilling mud mass depending on the inclination angle and azimuthal curvature using the Mohr-Coulomb and Mogi-Coulomb criteria. Examples of using BaraFLC Nano-1 to prevent wellbore rock instability are given.
