During the operation and repair of oil and gas wells, packers are used to separate the annular space of the production and casing strings. Slips play a significant role in packers’ installation and their performance directly affects the oil yield and production safety. In packers, the slips are inserted into the grooves of the slips’ holder and pressed against the cone due to the force of the slips’ holder springs or by grippers, depending on the packer diameter. In mechanical packers, when the pipe column is lowered, the slips are pressed against the borehole wall under the action of springs, and the cone wedges them in the casing string. The process of packer slips loading is divided into two stages. In the first stage, the slips open, and their deformation increases the radius of the upper part curvature. In the second stage of loading, the protrusions of the slips are embedded in the casing string wall from the inside. The paper presents calculations on the slips strength at the first stage of loading. The stress-strain state of the slips is determined and strength calculations are performed. To ensure the strength of the slips at the first stage of their loading, the area of variation in the ratio of the gap between the packer and the casing string to the inner radius of the casing string, as well as the gap between the packer and the casing string to the height of the slips were determined.
