An urgent task has been set to detect cracking of welded joints on pipelines of compressor station inlet-outlet loops, which can be solved both on the basis of flaw detector robots and using alternative diagnostic methods. It is shown that at present, flaw detector robots are limited to visual and measuring control of the inner surface of the pipeline, and internal defects of the weld and external cracking remain outside the control. The methodology for determining a "crack" type defect by non-contact magnetic methods based on the magneto-elastic effect is considered. A number of experimental work results have been analyzed in order to determine methodological approaches to identifying cracks by the magnetic characteristics of the welded seam of a pipeline in operation. It is concluded that it is technically possible to measure the magnetic induction vector with a fixed sensor above the input-output loop pipeline when depressurizing/gaining pressure and turning on/off cathodic protection. A technique for identifying a defect in a weld and determining the orientation of a crack relative to the pipeline axis is proposed.
