Study of the hydrodynamic parameters of a calibrator-ejector operation as a part of a drilling unit using computer simulation

Annotation:

The article studies the efficiency of drilling units with the use of a near-bit calibrator-ejector, one of the main elements of which are jet ejection nozzles that increase the speed of the drilling fluid flows flowing from them, simultaneously creating the effect of rarefaction in the bottomhole formation zone. The disadvantage of the calibrator-ejector existing design is the fact that the speed and distance (height) of the flow exiting the ejection nozzle of a circular internal cross-section are not always sufficient to completely pickup drill cuttings and the flushing of the inter-blade spaces is not always fully performed. To solve the above-said problem, the author of the article proposes an improvement of the device design by making an ejection nozzle with a cross section of the inner tapering surface in the form of an asymmetric hexagon, possessing three corners of one and the same size and three corners of another one with a smaller size. The proposed design was studied by simulation in the ANSYS Fluent CFD complex. The results of the study proved an increase of the drilling fluid flow rate in the area of the bit troughs and in the bottomhole zone by 3…5 % relative to the option with standard round nozzles, and in the area above the calibrator-ejector – by about 10…12 % with a simultaneous increase of central flow jet height, with a slight pressure decrease in the mentioned zone by 4…6 %.
