The high pace of development of digitalization, three-dimensional modeling and computer analysis [1, 2] has allowed engineers and designers of various industries to speed up the design process and, in particular, to improve strength calculations of highly loaded parts and structures. By applying modern design approaches, such as topology optimization, it has become possible to design, manufacture and operate critical parts and structures with increased efficiency in the energy and aviation industries [3]. Using a jack-up drilling rig (JUDR) as an example, the article discusses the use of the topological optimization method to improve the operational characteristics of a structure, ensure proper reliability and reduce capital costs during construction. The existing approaches are analyzed, an effective version of the mathematical optimization apparatus is proposed and a description of the subject area, boundary conditions and restrictions for the calculation is implemented. The optimization algorithm and its mathematical description, presented in the article, describe three main stages of improving the design configuration of the jack-up rig supports and make it possible to implement the optimal design option.
