Currently, the main technique of involving unconventional oil reserves into development, characterized by the reservoir low permeability and high clay content, is the drilling of horizontal wells with multi-stage hydraulic fracturing. Heavily clayed reservoirs have special requirements (due to the swelling of clays) to hydraulic fracturing fluids. In addition, under conditions of risks of crack penetration into non-targeted objects, the problem of crack propagation optimization becomes relevant. Based on these conditions, as well as taking into account the distribution of geomechanical properties in the reservoir, options for improving the design of hydraulic fracturing are considered, which are based on the transition from the base fluid to the polymer-free one.
