Annotation:

Movements of soil along or across the pipeline route (for example, landslides, surface fractures and liquefaction) pose a serious danger to oil and gas pipelines. The authors of the article overview the methods used to mitigate these processes for oil and gas trunk pipelines. The article also overviews hazardous geological processes and their impact on pipelines with reference to industry statistics on the frequency of ruptures. Geological studies, terrain assessment, design criteria, design concepts and engineering analysis methods are presented. Critical technical problems, proposals on management and coordination of mitigation of geological hazards aftereffects in the context of the preliminary and final stages of design are identified.

The necessity of careful initial planning is also emphasized, especially with regard to laying the pipeline through potentially hazardous areas and interaction with regulatory authorities, government agencies and other third-party organizations.
