Identification of drilling mud traces in core and cuttings by the shape of pyrolysis curves

Annotation:

Using of hydrocarbon-based drilling fluids (HBM) in core sampling inevitably affects the results of determining the composition and distribution of organic matter in the rock. Traces of HBM in the rock may be mistakenly interpreted as a sign of oil saturation. The standard pyrolysis method does not allow identifying the presence of HBM. The use of a modified pyrolysis method on Rock-Eval–6 and analysis of the shapes of the obtained pyrolytic curves allows identifying rock contamination with traces of HBM and organic colmatant. During the use of pyrolysis results to break off oil-saturated or oil-producing intervals, it is necessary to exclude the values, obtained for contaminated rocks.
