Formation of the method and prospects for development of stability assessment of clayey rocks prone to landslides in drilling mud media

Annotation:
Despite the authors of the article very intensive focus on publications dealing with the search of solutions that will strengthen the unstable clayey rock formations there still remain many questions about the processes which take place in clay formations of middle and late catagenesis like argillite. At the same time there exist no reliable methods of laboratory estimation of the drilling fluid filtrate interaction with low permeable clay rock. Current circumstances stimulate the search for the new ways to perform such laboratory tests. In order to select the drilling fluids that can strengthen unstable formations the method of determination of the stable condition time of core samples in liquid medium during single axis compression that was previously developed by NIIC "Nedra-Test" LLC was used and adapted in the way of optimization of time costs and the way of sample preparation. During testing the stable state of core samples in drilling fluids solutions the possibility of determination of changes of core samples initial solidity (before the study) by estimation of their residual strength after the presence in drilling fluid medium was studied. In authors’ opinion, this method can be used for testing core samples in the drilling fluids medium that can potentially strengthen the rock and in which the samples can stay stable during several days. The ways to improve the test method by increasing the base solidity of model samples with displacement of air to water in pores were defined during the study.
