A well, being operated by a dual-completion system using a dual-string sucker rod pumping unit with parallel tubing string arrangement has a lower economic efficiency compared to a conventional well with a sucker rod pumping unit due to high costs associated with the dual-string unit installation, operation and maintenance. One of the solutions to reduce these costs involves using only one surface drive instead of two separate drives for the dual-string sucker rod pumping unit. Analysis of the current state of the dual-string completion technology has shown that the issues of concern include lack of theoretical justification of possibility for operating the dual-string sucker rod pumping unit using one surface drive and lack of methods to provide the required pumping rates using only one drive. Another problem is inability of using drives to provide long-stroke pump operation mode with axial centering of stuffing boxes, installation of wellhead stuffing boxes on the same level, etc. Implementation of a dual-string sucker-rod pumping unit with one chain drive and equal pumping rates is possible in case of meeting the maximum allowable drive load conditions, capability of drive counterbalancing, and non-exceedance of drive pulling force during the pumping unit operation.

The objective of this study is to identify areas of concern in theory and practice by analyzing current state of the dual-tubing-string production technology in order to determine possible ways of reducing oil production costs. The aim is to analyze current state of the dual-string production technology, to justify the possibility of operating two tubing strings of a dual-string sucker rod pumping unit using one surface drive, and to determine the range of application. The methods used include analyses and mathematical methods. The results of this study suggest that dual-completion systems with sucker rod pumps operated by one surface drive provide reduction of oil production costs, thus laying the groundwork for improving wells profitability.
