A case study of the Samotlor field to assess the prospects for new hydrocarbon discoveries in continental reservoirs

Annotation:

The history of discoveries and development of hydrocarbon accumulations in the West Siberia covers a few decades. It seems that everything has been studied by seismic exploration, drilling, testing, and production, but new accumulations are still being discovered. Recently, new hydrocarbon discoveries have been made using new approaches and various methods and techniques in old fields in continental sediments that are difficult to interpret.

The authors of the article describe the lessons learned when working with continental deposits, the challenges of their correlation and the analysis of all available information to reveal new accumulations using a case study of the AV6–8 and PK groups of reservoirs of the Samotlor field.

The history of the Samotlor field development is briefly described, with the examples of the continental deposits correlations, the process of studying and verifying geological, geophysical and seismic information as well as the basic principles of identifying promising low-amplitude traps for planning drilling of new wells and sidetracks. The results of the studies, the authors’ views, opinion, and recommendations are given for further work with continental deposits.
