The market of natural gas production and consumption is highly dynamic in terms of applied technologies and end products. Currently, the most profitable way to monetize natural gas is through liquefied natural gas (LNG). In addition to LNG, the petrochemical and hydrogen industries are also developing, where natural gas serves as a key raw material. The authors of the article describe the challenges and requirements of a large LNG project in terms of field reserves and resources, technological design solutions and final demand. Technological specific features of the project implementation and definite technological shortcomings caused by the lack of domestic technologies at present are presented. A particular region – the Lena-Vilyuy Petroleum Province in the Far Eastern Russian Federal District – is considered and described, including prospective areas and reservoirs. The current state of the gas industry in the region and characteristics of major and promising development objects, including those ones with hard-to-recover reserves, are outlined. The authors of the article outline the main challenges associated with the implementation of such a complex project, given its significant distance from markets and ports where exports can be organized. The objective opinions in the field of development in current conditions are presented.
