The world economy development at the current stage of technological development is associated with energy consumption growth in most countries of the world. The article analyzes the dependence of the G-20 countries economic growth caused by the changes in energy consumption in 2000–2019. The analysis shows that most of the G-20 countries, and the world as a whole, are in the so-called "industrial" phase of development that requires growing energy consumption for economic growth. Only in five countries among the G-20 countries, such as the UK, Germany, France, Italy and Japan, economic growth was accompanied by a decrease in energy consumption that is due to the fact that these countries are in "post-industrial" phase of development. The result of the analysis of changes in all types of energy consumption shows that despite the fact that at the moment the thermal energy dominates (fossil fuel and nuclear energy – 88,5 % of the world energy consumption), a steady trend of leading growth rate of energy consumption from renewable sources (hydro, solar and wind energy) compared to the consumption of thermal energy is demonstrated over the past 20 years, that is a consequence of significant investments in the production of a unit of energy. Nonetheless, due to the fact that today the volume of energy production from renewable energy sources is only 11,5 % of the world energy consumption, in the medium term "hybrid" energy technologies using traditional sources (natural gas as the most efficient, environmentally friendly and widespread type of fossil fuel) and renewable energy will meet growing energy needs.
