Annotation:
Investigation of the process of gel formation in dilute and semidilute solutions of xanthan was performed by rheological methods as well as by NMR spectro-scopy, scanning electron microscopy and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). We estimated the average molecular weight of the polymer by the Mark-Hou-wink-Kuhn relationship and the radius of gyration of solvated macromolecules. From the concentration dependence of the dynamic viscosity of the aqueous polymer solutions the overlap concentration of polymer chains of xanthan was determined. The pH values allowing the formation of gels with optimum viscosity by cross-linking of macromolecules by chromium ions were found. The SAXS and electron microscopy results allowed estimating the structural parameters of the system before and after the binding of polyvalent ions to polymer chains.
