Reducing vibration during drilling by improving PDC bit design

Annotation:

The paper shows the negative impact of vibrations arising during the drilling process on the equipment and economic indicators. In this connection, the task is set to combat the negative effects of vibration. Causes and consequences of the main (axial, radial and torsion) types of vibrations on the BHA are highlighted. The advantages and disadvantages of existing methods of dealing with emerging vibrations that develop in the process of drilling hard rocks are given. A method is proposed to combat the emerging vibrations in the drill string associated with the modernization of the rock cutting tool. A constructive improvement consists in the use of self-stabilizing grooves formed in the central part of the bit, as well as in the unique installation of stabilization inserts that limit the radial movement of the tool during drilling. As a result of field testing of the seven-blade design of the PDC bit, using these innovations, it was possible to reduce the resulting vibration. The achieved modes of operation made it possible to achieve an increase in the PDC bit resource by 30 % and an increase in the ROP by 15 %, which, in turn, reduces the time for well construction and the development of a new field.
