Annotation:
The interdepartmental scientific seminar-discussion “Energy Sector: Is There a Future?” held on April 9, 2025 at Gubkin University, dedicated to the 95th anniversary of the university, repeatedly emphasized that in the conditions of rare earth metals, cobalt and lithium deficit, many new technologies, including those for the energy sector, practically have no prospects for survival. Without them it is impossible to develop future technologies in radio electronics, nuclear and renewable energy, machine building, defense, chemical, medical and many other industries. The article analyzes production, reserves, and estimates how long the resources of these critical resources will be available in the world and in the leading countries at current production rates according to the "the reserves-to-production ratio" criterion. The identified trends in the production of these resources indicate that the shortage of critical metals may become a serious obstacle to the successful development of both humanity's most important technologies and the energy transition implementation, creating new challenges for the global energy sector.
