RESISTANCE OF SEA GRASSES OF THE RUSSIAN SOUTHERN SEAS TO OIL POLLUTION

Annotation:

In the Azov and Black Seas, Zostera marina and Zostera noltei sea grasses form communities with a biomass from 1 to 6 kg/m2. Observations of seagrass communities on the Chushka Spit in the Kerch Strait have shown that communities with the participation of Zostera marina are more vulnerable to chronic oil pollution, they disappear at a concentration of oil in water of 1 mg/l; plant communities with the participation of Zostera noltei can develop at a concentration of oil in sea water of up to 10 mg/l. The resistance of coastal aquatic plants and macrophytes of the Sea of Azov to possible oil spills was assesed. The risks for underwater communities with the participation of sea grasses in case of probable oil spills remain, especially against the background of global warming and possible invasions of alien organisms.
