Studying the sorption process of dissolved petroleum products from water media with a carbon-containing material

Annotation:

The research findings of using an oil-extraction industry waste – the thermally modified kieselguhr sludge – as a sorption material for removing dissolved petroleum products from model water media are presented. It is demonstrated that the highest purification efficiency (90 %) is achieved at using the carbon-containing sorption material, obtained at sludge heat-treatment temperature 450 °C in low-oxygen conditions (TKS450). The sorption properties of carbon-containing sorption material TKS450 were studied in conditions of single-stage static adsorption in model systems, containing dissolved petroleum products; the sorption capacity made up 0,043 mol/g. The adsorption isotherm of dissolved petroleum products was plotted; the constants of Langmuir, Freundlich and Dubinin – Radushkevich equations were calculated. The sorption isotherm of dissolved petroleum products is the most accurately described with the Langmuir equation at correlation coefficient 0,9931. It is determined that the sorption interaction is specific and is confirmed with calculated energy value of sorption bond (15,369 kJ/mol); molecules of petroleum products are presumably sorbed due to hydrophobic interaction.
