Oil pollution is one of the main xenobiotic impacts on the environment caused by its prevalence and “volley” (avalanche-like), rather than gradual, load. Natural biological treatment systems are not able to cope with a sharp increase of xenobiotic load when oil enters. Therefore, it is necessary to re-cultivate the polluted soil and soils associated with it to restore the natural composition, productivity and economic value by reducing the content of oil products and their accompanying substances to a safe state. The use of sorbents for gathering oily wastes is one of the most effective and fastest methods of soil purification, convenient for use in the area of enterprises in respect of which environmental problems are set. The purpose of the article is to determine the oil capacity of wood shavings obtained from the most common tree species in the Irkutsk region. The possibility of using pine wood shavings as a sorbent when cleaning soils from oil pollution is considered. The residual oil content in the soil after cleaning by wood shavings was determined by the chromatographic method application. The conclusion is made about the effectiveness of using pine wood shavings as sorbents for cleaning oil-contaminated soils after accidental oil spills. It has been established that the negative impact on the environment is significantly reduced.
