Annotation:

Application of methanotrophic microorganisms in the oil and gas industry is not new: studies of the processes of methane and other hydrocarbons bacterial oxidation are carried out as a part of prospecting for oil and gas fields. However, this is not the only one possible direction of use of methanotrophic microorganisms in the oil and gas industry. The wide distribution of methanotrophic microorganisms in various ecosystems and possible adaptation to any climatic conditions make it possible to identify a promising way for their use as filters microbiological consortium to reduce methane emissions from abandoned oil and gas wells and control its technical condition. According to experts’ opinion, there are more than 10000 such wells in the Russian Federation. Ensuring the safety of such technological facilities is an important task. The use of biofilters based on methanotrophic microorganisms can be an effective and environmentally friendly solution to this problem.
