During the last decade, the method of probe spectroscopy has gained popularity for predicting soil cover characteristics because it is more efficient than traditional research methods, easy-to-use and relatively quick monitoring measures implementation. The information obtained in case of direct spectral sensing is subjected to mathematical processing of spectral characteristics arrays, which is often difficult. Optimization of work with systems of multifactorial estimation of soils state and increase of the method accuracy can be realized by introduction of an indexing method allowing by means of the calculated criteria, established experimentally, to estimate quality of the investigated object. The article presents the technique of the indexing method application during the direct contact spectral sounding of soils, similar to that applied one at remote sensing of the Earth, for the purpose of realization of the operative control of their state, definition of pollution level and prevention of possible degradation. A variant of the index for determining the content of phosphorus in the soil was developed.
