Analysis of methane emissions from oil and gas companies of the Russian Federation

Annotation:
The authors of the article discuss issues related to methane emissions by leading oil and gas companies in Russia. Various sources of methane entering the atmosphere, both natural and anthropogenic, were analyzed. An integrated approach to hydrocarbon emissions reduction, including technological innovations, energy-saving technologies and installations as well as monitoring of methane emissions is proposed. Methods of ground-based and remote monitoring and data from oil and gas companies on the release of methane into the atmosphere at all stages, starting from production, transportation of oil and gas, processing of hydrocarbons and their use are presented. An analysis of reports on the environmental activities of leading oil and gas companies reveals a positive trend in reducing greenhouse gas emissions for the period of 2017–2022. However, the volume of methane emissions currently remains significant and the issues of developing and introducing new processes and technologies to reduce methane emissions remain relevant. The specific methods, applied for reducing methane emissions during the main transportation of natural gas: in case of technological operations of starting and stopping gas turbine gas pumping units, emptying replaced sections of the gas pipeline, equipment cleaning process (air intake chambers, separators, dust collectors) are discussed in the article as well. In the oil production industry, reduction of hydrocarbon emissions by all available methods to the established level of 95 % remains the main task.
