Assessment of sorbed oil toxicity at low temperatures by a biotesting method

Annotation:

The toxicity of oil, sorbed in ice conditions, was assessed using two test objects (Artemia salina, Phaeodactylum tricornutum). The behavior of oil treated by sorbent and oil in a clean spill at low temperatures and in ice conditions was studied. The experiment was carried out in containers under natural external conditions of temperature changes in winter. Changes of ice formation in different experimental containers were recorded. An acute toxic effect on the test organism was noted: on the forty-second day of the experiment – in all samples with oil, on the ninth day – only in containers with Lessorb and S-V BIO sorbents. It was shown that during the experiment the algae experienced a greater acute (72-hour exposure) than a chronic one (168-hour exposure) toxic effect. It has been established that the technical properties of sorbents affect the potential toxicity of the environment for test objects. It was revealed that when responding to hydrocarbon spills in the marine environment, in order to reduce the potential toxicity of oil and the risk of secondary pollution, it is necessary to establish the sorbent/oil ratio experimentally.
