Carbon polygons are a step towards carbon neutrality of oil and gas enterprises

Annotation:
Currently, an increasing number of oil and gas companies in the world set measurable goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and regulate the carbon footprint of manufactured products. The authors of the article define the concept "carbon polygons", substantiate their importance for achieving ESG goals in Russia, present data on their number and territorial location. Possible ways of achieving carbon neutrality by enterprises when interacting with carbon polygons using the data obtained are outlined. The concept of "carbon tax" as an element of the mechanism of transboundary carbon regulation is determined as well. The "climate project" term is determined, their types are enumerated, the life cycle and objectives of their development and the number of registered climate projects are described. Potential opportunities and risks for climate projects on the territory of the Russian Federation are considered. Examples of companies that have gained carbon units through the climate projects implementation are given. The relationship between carbon polygons, carbon footprint of products, carbon tax and climate projects is mentioned. The authors of the article presented a scheme developed by them for achieving carbon neutrality of enterprises when interacting with carbon polygons, taking into account the implementation of climate projects and solutions for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. It is noted that the existing technological solutions to achieve carbon neutrality of an individual enterprise may be insufficient and in this case it is required to implement natural climate projects using methodologies developed by carbon polygons.
