Analysis of the causes of accidents at hazardous production facilities of main pipeline gas transport

Annotation:
The authors of the article analyze the accidents that occurred on main gas pipelines during the period of 2018–2023 as well as the main reasons and factors influencing the accident rate of gas main pipeline transport facilities, based on the data provided by the Federal Environmental, Industrial and Nuclear Supervision Service of Russia. Information on 29 accidents was studied, and the main reasons that led to their occurrence were identified, including both organizational and technical ones. The most common technical reasons that mostly contributed into destruction, fires, explosions are stress corrosion cracking, weld defects, and mechanical damage; among the organizational ones – the lack of in-line diagnostics (its insufficiency and untimeliness), insufficient level of construction and production control as well as the incorrectness of the performed industrial safety examination. The "lessons" learned from accidents indicate the necessity of improving production control during operation, construction, installation and repair work, quality improvement and completeness of in-line diagnostics, reliability monitoring and correctness of industrial safety expertise conclusions.
