Annotation:
The authors of the article present the results of studying possibilities of lithium extraction from associated formation waters using the Kovykta gas condensate field as an example. Lithium, used in the batteries manufacture and other high technologies, plays a key role in modern industries and its cost is constantly growing. The methods applied for assessing the impact of its extraction on the environment, including an analysis of changes of the level and quality of groundwater, ecosystems and soils. A separate item of study was the consideration and possible sale of by-product mineral waste during lithium extraction. The technology that will be used in the lithium extraction chain minimizing the negative impact of its extraction is discussed as well. The conditions under which lithium extraction becomes more sustainable are determined. The authors of the article point out the importance of interaction between industry and environmental protection as well as the necessity of developing regulatory standards which promote sustainable development in the field of mineral raw materials extraction and their components. The conclusions made can be useful for specialists in the field of ecology, geology and regional planning.
