Oil and gas wells are currently drilled manually according to drilling projects. The purpose and objectives of the study are development of an intelligent drilling machine (IDM) for optimal control of the axial load on a drill bit, its block diagram and principles of operation. IDM automatically recognizes the rock at the bottomhole, calculates the optimal axial load and performs bottomhole drilling on it. The machine implements an adaptive method for optimal control of oil and gas wells drilling, when the IDM mathematical model is updated every 0,3 m of penetration. The IDM computing unit was tested at the Chayandinskoye oil and gas condensate field, the results of the testing, due to drilling in optimal modes at different penetration intervals, proved mechanical speed increase up to 2…5 m/h. IDM is designed to automatically control the process of drilling oil and gas wells.
