Annotation:

The Late Proterozoic complex of the Volga-Ural oil and gas province is characterized by very poor and limited geological-geophysical study due to the complexity of its geological structure; nevertheless, it attracts the interest of many scientists because of its high hydrocarbon potential. The Vychegda Depression, whose sedimentary cover is 70…80 % composed by the Riphean-Vendian sediments, is considered to be one of such potential areas of the Volga-Ural oil and gas province. The main problem of the region is insufficient knowledge of source rocks. Therefore, the article proposes an approach to assessing the source rocks quality in the ancient Late Proterozoic sediments of the Vychegda depression on the basis of a comprehensive study of the results of the core geochemical studies and geophysical well logging. The statistical relationship between the organic carbon content and gamma logging readings was used as a technique for projecting source rocks potential. The results of the study showed a high correlation between these parameters, which made it possible to continuously estimate organic carbon concentrations in sections of the Riphean-Vendian sediments. The highest organic carbon contents are characteristic of clay members of the Riphean age, which allows attributing them to the main source formations in the Upper Proterozoic complex.
