Despite the fact that permeability is one of the most important characteristics of a reservoir, its justification, especially in the unexplored part of the field, remains a relevant issue. Attempts to find a theoretically justified permeability equation are ongoing. Dobrynin V.M. in one of his works [1] considers the selection of a permeability equation as one of the main tasks. The relatively small number of works on justifying theoretical permeability leads to the widespread practical application of the approach of extending core dependencies to the unexplored part of the field. However, often the scatter of measurements is too large to confidently predict permeability based on them. In such cases, the problem of reducing uncertainty arises. The classification of reservoir quality classes based on the Hydraulic Flow Units (HFU) method is one such approach. However, despite the seemingly high level of theoretical justification of this method, its predictive ability often does not hold up in practice. This paper identifies reasons why researchers should not limit themselves to a single flow unit division model and proposes a way to expand the application of this method to other mathematical models, allowing for successful use of this method for a much larger number of reservoirs.
