Annotation:

To streamline ideas about the structures of productive reservoirs in terms of fundamental research, systematization and development of ideas of mathematical modeling and classification methods, the following is proposed:

1. Abstract from the reality and structural patterns of fractured and pore media and consider the properties of the reservoir, characterized by purely pore and purely fractured spaces (simple properties).

2. Interpret the transition areas of reservoir rocks properties as complex (mixed) types with the properties of pore-fractured and fractured-pore reservoirs.

3. Use one of the primary concepts in mathematics – the concept of set.

Formalization and analysis of an oil reservoir using mathematical set theory with a covariant transition to applied modeling made it possible to consider the object under study from the perspective of (relatively) its basic properties (pore, fracture, complex/mixed media). The values of pore, fracture permeability and total permeability of the reservoir rock matrix were used as specific characteristics in set-theoretic modeling (STM) of the research object.

The formalizations of fundamental (using the example of STM) and applied areas of research on productive reservoirs (using the example of statistical recognition of reservoir type and estimation of hydrocarbon reserves) are compared.
